Graphical Interface
Many people who want to use VLC media player on macOS will be intending to use the standard graphical interface that is provided by VLC. The standard interface consists of the eight menus in the menu bar and the 'VLC - Controller' window that opens up by default. This section outlines what VLC can do for you (at V0.8.6a current active is V3.0.10) and will be completed as I check the use of menu options.
The ten menu bar options are listed below along with the main interesting capabilities under each menu item:
- VLC which allows you to check for an updated application, to access the preferences, and to add an interface.
- File which allows you to open a media file, or an associated file (such as subtitles). It also has a wizard to allow the streaming of video, or the capturing of a streamed video to a file.

I had a heck of a time getting this to work the way I wanted it. I kept attempting a command-line execution of VLC to only get the following response (not what I wanted):

Eventually I ran this:

No Dock
In previous versions you can replace the VLC at the end of the path with clivlc to suppress the launch of any Mac-like interface (VLC wouldn't even appear in the Dock then) or if transcoding from the command-line crashed with a Bus error.
Android zipalign. I already have a release unsigned version apk and I am trying to sign it on my mac. On the last step it suggests to zipalign the signed apk but mac doesn't have zipalign. I did 'brew search ' still can't find it. I searched online and can't find standalone zipalign script.
This does not work anymore (see Forum thread #58378)
As given by Command-line interface#macOS, specify the option -I followed by the interface you want to add e.g. VLC -Idummy.

The preferences menu
This menu gives you access to all the settings that establish the behaviour of types of commands. Most of these you will probably not need to touch when you first start using the package, others you will want to set as personal defaults and some you will want to set for a single use only. Each section of preferences comes in two flavours, ordinary and advanced. The ordinary preferences are settings for the simpler parameters of the application, the advanced settings require some deeper knowledge to use them effectively.
What you will notice is that in the preferences are items that are simple to understand and use as well as items that probably require you to be a developer to understand let alone use. Some I strongly suspect are mainly for debugging purposes and may be better if they were moved to such a section. The image above gives a beautiful example of this in action: the first preference is about enabling and setting a default output volume for the application, the second seems to be about a hardware/software standard, originating from Philips, but whose utility here escapes me even after after some web research. There may be a link with the ability to detect Dolby which follows immediately after but that doesn't go grey when the first is deselected so it is unclear. Again the ability to deselect Dolby detection is unlikely to appeal to a casual VLC user. There has been an attempt to separate these two types of preference through an advanced items checkbox visible in the image above. As you can see, since advanced is not selected, the criteria used for choosing advanced preferences may not fit the casual users perceptions
